Context Office was tasked with identifying potential sites across England for significant public artworks in relation to a major infrastructure project. Our work involved looking at the many layers that influence place, GIS mapping over large geographical areas, as well as detailed analysis of existing site environments and future conditions. We worked with cultural and engineering teams to propose locations that could unlock meaningful benefits for local communities and offer artists stimulating sites to work with. We supported the client group through a methodical selection process, visualising information for decision making. We developed a rigorous framework of criteria including landscape, engineering and demographic factors, cultural adjacencies and potential connections. Context Office was then involved in taking the first sites forward defining spatial ideas, access routes and relevant precedents for the curatorial team, helping to produce artist briefs for commissions on this exciting long-term project.
