Context Office is developing streetscape designs for the Shepherd Market area of Mayfair in central London. We began by studying the many physical and social layers that make up this place, observing current patterns of use on site. We then developed context led proposals for improving walking routes, enhancing the quality of public spaces and celebrating local histories such as the May Fair. We worked closely with NRP on traffic and transport issues, and with Studio Dekka on lighting ideas. We have engaged with local residents and shopkeepers to investigate opportunities for pedestrianisation, the use of natural stone materials, new tree planting, lighting, outdoor seating and public art features. We are now preparing designs with Westminster City Council’s highways engineering team for the next steps of design, fundraising, consultation and adoption.
