Shepherd Market design

Context Office redesigned the streetscape of Shepherd Market, in Mayfair central London. We began by studying the many physical and social layers that make up this wonderful place, observing current patterns of use on site. We developed context led proposals for improving walking routes, increasing pedestrian space, enhancing the quality of the public realm, adding SuDS, trees, and celebrating local histories on the site of the May Fair and the hidden River Tyburn.

We worked through all design stages from concept to construction on site. We engaged closely with a hands-on client team and local stakeholders to develop outline proposals. We identified locations for pedestrianisation and reduced carriageways, cycle infrastructure, planting, new surfaces, signage, benches and public art features. We then presented to Westminster City Council officers, councillors and amenity groups to build consensus. We collaborated with a specialist team including traffic and transport engineers NRP, WSP, lighting designers Studio Dekka, Street Tree Care and Meristem. Following a very successful public consultation on the proposals, we finalised detailed designs and inspected construction with the council highways term contractors. The first parts of the project were completed in 2026.
