Hamilton Mausoleum

Context Office collaborated with architects Freddie Phillipson and Gustaf Hedberg on design ideas for the Hamilton Mausoleum in Lanarkshire. This extraordinary building and public park are all that remains of Hamilton Palace – once the grandest house and planned landscape in Scotland, demolished in the 1920s. Our competition entry reimagined the mausoleum opened up for public use as ‘the best room in town’ anchored by a community glasshouse for growing and preparing healthy food. We re-set these buildings within an ‘edible park’ of orchards and foraging woodland. We were inspired by Clydesdale’s legacy of fruit growing, commercial greenhouses and famed steel production. The designs support education, healthy living, occupational therapy and rehabilitation of the land. Our ideas re-connect the mausoleum with the town centre along improved walking and cycling routes, reaching over the motorway and river towards Motherwell. Our team submission was selected by the judges as one of the shortlisted designs. The full entry can be viewed here
